Random utility models in marketing research: a survey

چکیده
Random utility (RU) models are well-established methods for describing discrete choice behavior. Recently, there has been a strong upsurge in interest driven by advances in data gathering and estimation technology. This review paper describes the principles and issues, and develops a taxonomy of three major families of models. The paper summarizes and classifies the different approaches. The advantages and limitations of the various alternatives are outlined. Practical issues in implementing the models are also discussed. D 2000 Elsevier Science Inc. All rights reserved.

Fuzzy Random Utility Choice Models: The Case of Telecommuting Suitability
Random utility models have been widely used in many diverse fields. Considering utility as a random variable opened many new analytical doors to researchers in explaining behavioral phenomena. Introducing and incorporating the random error term into the utility function had several reasons, including accounting for unobserved variables. This paper incorporates fuzziness into random utility mode...
متن کاملModeling Multiple Sources of State Dependence in Random Utility Models: A Distributed Lag Approach
Wepropose a utility-theoretic brand-choice model that accounts for four different sources of state dependence: 1. effects of lagged choices (structural state dependence), 2. effects of serially correlated error terms in the random utility function (habit persistence type 1), 3. effects of serial correlations between utility-maximizing alternatives on successive purchase occasions of a household...
متن کاملProbabilistic versus random-utility models of state dependence: an empirical comparison
Brand choice models estimated on scanner panel data typically show that a household’s brand choice process is characterized by state dependence, i.e. a household’s brand choices are serially correlated over time. Two approaches have been employed by marketing researchers to estimate state dependence effects using brand choice data. The first approach is based on probability models—such as Marko...
متن کاملThe Mediating Role of Quality Services in the Relationship between Internal Marketing and Customer Satisfaction
This study was conducted in 2016 with the aim of studying the mediating role of quality services in the relationship between state marketing and customer satisfaction. The population of this study includes all staff and customers of Melli Bank of Shiraz; that among these, 150 people were selected by simple random sampling method. Reliability was confirmed by Cronbach's alpha and composite relia...

Pplications of random utility models to scanner data have been widely presented in marketing for the last 20 years. One particular problem with these applications is that they have ignored possible correlations between the independent variables in the deterministic component of utility (price, promotion, etc.) and the stochastic component or error term. In fact, marketing-mix variables, such as...
